Summer Birdhouse Project

This summer we built a couple of birdhouses, to test out a new model for fund raising online. The idea is to encourage anyone out there to channel their energies into artistic products, and sell them on our website.

We found bird houses in all shapes and sizes, in all kinds of wood. To get started we found a few models in a local art shop, which were from recycled wood, with accents to add sturdiness. We set off to find paint and ended up on acrylic paints, which we found at our local Michael's store.

We liked the bird houses that were made from lighter, more porous woods, which allowed the acrylic paint, thick and gooey, to absorb and just melt into the wood, taking on its texture. The wood colors allow bright paints to shine through, and we chose two color schemes on either end of the spectrum: a tried-and-true color combination from maritime themes, and a new chaotic mix of colors that was the brain child of KJ who was in between gigs and was in a particularly creative mood.

We looked at all sorts of photos of cool bird houses. Most of them were finished in dark colors, so we thought we would have at least one brightly fashioned version. We also saw neat contraptions of many bird houses in one overall structure. We opted to make ours portable, with a small string helping it to rest in a tree, or hang from a fence.
